Running coverage ‘cross the country

More than 70 teams converged on Terre Haute, Ind., for the cross country pre-nationals this past weekend on the same course where nationals will be held next month. (BTW, LaVern-Gibson Championship Cross Country Course is a great place to watch a race – except when the wind chill drops below 30 as it did last year. My hands are still defrosting.)

A few college newspapers covered this major Division I event won by perennial powerhouses Oregon (men) and Washington (women). Here’s some of the coverage.

The Indiana Statesman Terre Haute was flooded with runners from all over the country this weekend, competing in the Pre-Nationals meet at the LaVern-Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which featured 22 of the top men’s programs in the nation.

Daily Emerald/Oregon Whatever disappointment Luke Puskedra had left over from the Bill Dellinger Invitational two weeks ago was left behind, along with the rest of the pack, at the Pre-National Invitational Saturday.

The Daily/Washington In case you haven’t heard, the UW women’s cross-country team is good. Kendra Schaaf proclaimed it from the hilltops during this past weekend, leading the women to a victory in their race at the pre-national meet in Terre Haute, Ind., with her second-place, 20:29 individual effort.

The Crimson White/Alabama In 1930, Atlanta Journal columnist Everett Strupper described what he heard to be a stampede of elephants as the Crimson Tide football team took the field.

Independent Alligator/Florida Before the Pre-NCAA Invitational began Saturday, UF coach Todd Morgan knew the women’s team had a chance to do something never done before at the event: finish in the top four.

IUPUI Sports Information The IUPUI men’s cross country team got a first-hand look at a big time meet as Head Coach Chuck Koeppen’s squad took part in the ISU Pre-Nationals Meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on a chilly Saturday afternoon. Nearly half of the nation’s top 30 teams took part in the blue race as the Jaguars finishing 34th overall.

On another note, five runners were suspended from Winthrop’s cross country team for drinking despite being below the legal age limit.
