Stories you may have missed

Here are some stories about sports and media you may have missed:

■ Fewer media requested credentials for Sunday’s Super Bowl. Still, 4,589 media folks did ask to cover the game.

■ Sports media expert Steve Klein (one of my favorites) says sports teams should underwrite coverage of their teams, an idea floated by Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban and prompted by newspaper cuts across the country.

■ The Canadian Broadcast Company banned the use of the word ‘pansification,’ something sports media expert Marie Hardin says encourages prejudice.

■ How big is the Super Bowl? Most networks threw in the towel, realizing they could not sack such a monster event.

■ The MLB network signed Bob Costas, a 19-time Emmy Award winner and NBC broadcaster to do play by play for some games this summer, although he will also remain with NBC.

■ ESPN has been hit by an economy in recession, freezing positions and cutting 200 unfilled positions.
